Wheatgrass and Immunity: B Complex Vitamins

B-complex vitamins are essential for energy and immune system function. There are eight B vitamins - Thiamine (Vitamin B1), Riboflavin (B2), Niacin (B3), Pantothenic Acid (B5), Pyridoxine (B6),  Biotin (B7), Folic Acid (B9), and Cobalamin (B12). These vitamins convert the food you eat (carbohydrates) into the fuel you need for energy (glucose). Getting the RDA of all eight B vitamins make your immune system stronger, and protects you against developing COVID-19.

Make sure you get the proper amount of B vitamins daily to combat stress. Too much stress can impair your overall health and immunity, making you susceptible to COVID-19, as well as cancer, cardiovascular disease, and other chronic illnesses.

Your body doesn’t store B vitamins since they are water-soluble.

Do you need a safe, easy way to get enough B-complex vitamins? Wheatgrass has enough Vitamin B12 to satisfy your RDA, and it also contains high amounts of niacin, Vitamins B1,B2, B5 and B6. There’s no folate in wheatgrass naturally, but some wheatgrass supplements add folate to their products to give you a full complement of B-complex vitamins. Wheatgrass also has choline, a nutrient sometimes referred to as Vitamin B4.

Here’s an overview of how B Complex vitamins affect overall well-being and immunity.

Vitamin B1

Thiamine is sometimes called an anti-stress vitamin because it strengthens the immune system. Long-term stress weakens your immune system and makes you more likely to develop infections or diseases.

This vitamin helps treat or prevent glaucoma, heart disease, cataracts and other medical issues. Thiamine may not be absorbed efficiently by older adults. Signs of thiamine deficiency include loss of appetite, fatigue, and muscle weakness.

Vitamin B1 is necessary for the formation of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), a compound used in every cell in your body.

Men need 1.2 mg of Vitamin B1 daily; women need 1.1 mg daily.

Vitamin B2

Riboflavin assists in energy production and cell growth. It helps enzymes provide daily functions,  and helps breakdown steroids and fats. Vitamin B2 provides protection against cataracts by guarding glutathione, an antioxidant necessary for eye health. Riboflavin helps prevent preeclampsia (high blood pressure) in pregnant woman, and can also relieve migraines.

Substances created from the bacterial vitamin synthesis of Vitamin B2 and folic acid may help the body recognize infection and possibly beat it.

The daily RDA for Vitamin B2 is 1.3 mg for men and 1.1 mg for women. If you have intense migraines, you may use up to 400 mg to treat them.

Vitamin B3 (Niacin)

Research conducted at L.A.’s Cedar-Sinai Medical Center discovered that niacin may be able to fight deadly bacteria that causes Staphyloccocus aureus (MRSA) and other infections.  Vitamin B3 may be able to boost average immunity about 1000 times. HIgh doses of niacin were shown to stimulate genes that produced neutrophil cells. Neutrophils chase away bad bacteria and get rid of Staph/MRSA.

Vitamin B3 makes your body’s white cells stronger so they are better able to kill infectious bacteria. Recent studies have also shown that niacin (and to a lesser extent, other B-complex vitamins) can help protect against COVID-19.

The RDA for niacin is 16 mg for men and 14mg for women.

 Vitamin B5

Pantothenic Acid is used in many hair care products, but it has other important health benefits. Vitamin B5. These benefits include:

Nervous system function
Liver function
Digestion
Production of red blood cells
Production of sex hormones in the adrenal gland

The daily allowance of Vitamin B5 is 5 mg for adults.

Vitamin B6

Vitamin B6 is one of the best pro-immunity vitamins you can take. It keeps antibodies strong to fight infections. This vitamin, also known as Pyridoxine, transports oxygen and makes new red blood cells. Vitamin B6 also helps produce T-cells and white blood cells to increase protection against infection and disease.

Adults should get 1.3 mg of Vitamin B6 daily. Women over 50 years old should take 1.5 mg per day.

Vitamin B7 (Biotin)

Biotin keeps your hair, nails and skin healthy. However, biotin does more than improve your physical appearance.

Vitamin B7 is also important for pregnant because it helps the fetus grow and stay healthy. Biotin also regulates blood sugar to prevent diabetes.

You should get between 30 and 100 mcg of water-soluble biotin per day.

Vitamin B9 (Folate)

Folate is needed to maintain cells and stop negative changes to DNA that lead to cancer and other diseases. You should get 400mcg of folate a day; pregnant women need 600 mcg a day.  Alcoholics and people with colitis or other intestinal disorders also need about 600 mcg daily since they have reduced ability to absorb nutrients.

Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 supports mood, energy and boosts immunity. It helps your body produce sufficient red blood cells to fight off pathogens. If you don’t get enough Vitamin B12, your body will have fewer red blood cells. You may develop pernicious anemia, which causes dizziness, pale skin, fragile bones and cold hands and feet, among other symptoms.

Benefits of Vitamin B12 include:

More energy
Protection against birth defects
Bone health
Better mood and natural protection against depression
Healthy skin, hair and nails
Improved cognitive ability

The RDA for Cobalamin is 2.4 mcg daily for adults.
