Botanical Spotlight: Schizandra Berry

The Schizandra Berry, also spelled Schisandra and known as Wu Wei Zi or Five-Flavor Berry, has long been used in traditional Chinese medicine. It can be found in both China and Russia, and grows in conditions similar to those of grapes. It’s called “Five-Flavor Berry” because it’s known to contain all five of China’s most notable flavors – spicy, sweet, sour, salty, and bitter. If that sounds a little strange, you needn’t worry – it is most often mixed with other ingredients as a powder, so the flavor shouldn’t be too noticeable. Of course, if you’re interested, you can always try it in its dried berry form! The berries are often used throughout Asia to make herbal tea.

There are a variety of uses for schizandra berries. It’s believed to increase energy and endurance, as well as bolster immunity and decrease stress. More practically, it’s excellent support for the liver, both through promoting cell growth and stimulating the proteins that break down harmful toxins. It can work synergistically with ginseng to help cleanse toxins, which is the liver’s primary function. Ginseng helps the body better metabolize vitamins and minerals, so you have the combined effect of “out with the bad, in with the good.”

Scizandra berries have also been used to balance blood pressure and blood sugar, bring better overall balance to the body. Going even further, it can be used to treat high cholesterol, premenstrual syndrome, digestive issues, excessive sweating, exhaustion, and even depression.

All of these combined benefits are when this herb has been used to support the wheatgrass in both Happy Girl and Zeal O2. While wheatgrass oxygenates, cleanses, and supports you body’s cells, Scizandra berry is working hard to boost its ability to remove toxins. Zeal O2 is excellent for aiding in digestion in part due to this herb, and Happy Girl’s ability to manage premenstrual symptoms is increased. When combined with numerous other herbs, enzymes, and vitamins, the result is extraordinary.

It takes a lot of experimentation and refining to create a combined supplement that offers the effectiveness and benefits available in WheatgrassLove products.
