The definition of being healthy and fit has changed numerous times, and it still varies in many peoples’ minds. When people set weight loss goals for themselves, it’s often with the mindset of wanting to become “skinny.” However, many people don’t realize that when they lose extra weight, they’re still in the same body that they started with. Without proper focus on becoming fit instead of just becoming skinnier, people lost sight of the real goal. Losing weight doesn’t necessarily mean gaining or toning muscle, reaching a healthy heart rate, or being able to do more physically enduring activities. When we head to the gym, it should be with the goal of creating a healthier body for ourselves… not just “getting skinny.”
Being fit entails having a healthy heart, strong bones and muscles, lots of energy, and other positive traits that allow you to live a happy and productive life. To be fit, you have to work hard. There are many different factors that allow you to be fit, including the nutritional, the physical, and the mental. These elements will help remake your body into the best version of itself. No matter what, there’s always room for improvement.
Our bodies aren’t capable of operating at their peak with a crummy diet, which is why we need to be smart about how we are fueling ourselves when we’re working our bodies. Some people may be able to eat whatever they want and still look skinny on the outside, but an interior look of their body would show that skinny doesn’t necessarily mean healthy. Feeding your body nutritious foods allows it to build and recover, leading you to a fitter lifestyle.
Have you noticed how the word “fit” is in “fitness?” Just because someone weighs less than you doesn't mean they’re healthier. In fact, weight is just a small part of what a healthy, fit lifestyle calls for. Giving your body goals to hit -- like setting a new mile time, hitting a few more reps on the bars, or even just burning a few more calories each time you work out -- improves your body’s fitness ability one step at a time.
Your body isn’t the only thing that needs work when you’re getting fit. Your mind also plays a huge part. Motivation is what drives you to work harder, which is why it’s a key factor when you’re pushing your body to improve itself. Wanting to be fit means being dedicated to working hard for what you want. In the end, you’re not just getting the figure you wanted or a smaller number on the scale… you’re improving the overall health of your body!
