Exercise is something we need every day to keep our bodies strong. It gets our hearts pumping, blood flowing, and sweat dripping, filling us with endorphins and other good things. We have bodies built for speed and agility, and a determined mind. However, we don’t use these assets as often as we should. There are tons of ways to work out, but the bottom line is that it should help you live a happy, healthy lifestyle.
1. Find your own pace.
We have to remember to build up stamina to reach our goals. No one can successfully run a marathon without hours and hours of practice. The same idea goes for the way you exercise. Pushing your body without a foundation to support it is dangerous and can lead to injury. Set a goal for yourself and create a pace that will lead you there. The time and energy you put in will help you succeed in reaching your workout goals.
2. Stay hydrated.
Ideally, your body should always be hydrated, but this is extremely important when you are engaging in any physical activity. When your body works hard, a lot of water is lost through perspiration. Most people don’t realize when they are dehydrated, so it’s important to keep water by your side at all times. Electrolytes found in drinks like Gatorade and PowerAde are also efficient in keeping your body hydrated during a workout. Try drinking water 30 minutes prior to your workout to avoid side cramps, and follow up with tons of water post-workout.
3. Mix it up.
While routines are nice and easy to accomplish, they can become a bit boring after a while. Doing something other than your ordinary trip to the gym will help your body to recover and give your mind a change of pace. Try heading out for a hike, swimming, a bike ride, or maybe a run along the beach. Getting outdoors for exercise will motivate you to be active and also give you a breath of fresh air. If you’re not really into being outside, sign up for an exercise class at your gym and find something you can enjoy for your “off” days.
4. Distract yourself.
Being on the Stairmaster for an hour isn’t exactly the most exciting thing you could be doing. Bring something to the gym that will distract you from watching the timer on your machine. Whether it’s a book, an iPad, or just watching whatever TV show they have on, paying attention to something other than the machine’s countdown will make time pass faster when you’re feeling like your cardio workout will never end.
5. Stay motivated.
Negative thoughts won’t help you through your workout. List the reasons why you’re working out and how it will help you in different aspects of your life. Staying healthy might be motivation enough, but there’s also the goal of that summer beach body you want. Try to treat yourself when you’ve done well with your workout goals as an incentive.
6. Listen to your body.
Pushing yourself to try harder and step it up a few notches is tempting, but don’t overdo it. If you feel that something isn’t working the way it’s supposed to, then stop and take care of yourself or ask for help. Forcing your body to do things it isn’t prepared for will lead to injury. If you feel that you’re not being challenged enough, then take that as the green light to take your workout to the next level. If you’re feeling lower on energy than normal, try a natural energy booster like REVV.
7. Leave time to stretch.
You don’t just want to make your muscles stronger or leaner, you also want them to be limber and healthy. Leaving the gym without a steady stretching session will lead to stiff and sore muscles due to a buildup of lactic acid. Stretching will alleviate muscle cramps and also increase blood circulation. It’ll guide your body to a quick recovery after hard workouts and increase flexibility, which prevents injury. Plus, it feels great!
